Discovering hidden information through questions

In a previous blog post, we stated that an interview might feel like an interrogation, but it should actually be a conversation giving you an opportunity to discuss the role in depth. Here, we also provide some questions enabling you to discover hidden information

Interviewers are human beings. It's important to understand their mindset during an interview. An interview is usually seen like a mundane task. They can't wait to find the right candidate and move on with their actual job, delegate to this new person or share workload. So it's very refreshing when an interview turns from a 1 way questionnaire into a healthy dialogue between professionals. Furthermore, the interviewer's answers can deliver insights that can help you target your answers even more effectively and construct a meaningful follow up.

To transform a 1-way interrogation into a conversation, arm yourself with the following questions, exercise judgement as to when to pepper them in an interview and don't be afraid to ask them

  • Who succeeds in this job and why?

  • Consequently, who fails in this job?

  • What do you consider the most important day to day activities of the role?

  • What is the most challenging aspect of the job?

  • What are the projects scheduled for the first 6 months?

  • What are your expectations of my achievements in the first 100 days?

  • What will you expect me to have achieved in the first 6 months?

  • What are some of the biggest challenges the business/department are facing and what will be my role as team member in tackling them?

Remember to take good notes of the answers as they will serve you well either in a follow up interview with the same company or similar roles.
